Pollution

Studies have shown that increased pollution aggravates asthma symptoms and can increase the need for emergency room visits and hospitalization. Pollution exists both indoors and outdoors. Particles of sulfur dioxide and nitrous dioxide found in car exhaust are the main offenders outdoors, while wood-burning or unvented stoves and heaters are the main culprits of indoor pollution.

What to Do About Pollution Triggers

As with any trigger, avoidance is the best control measure. Sometimes this is impossible as pollution is in the air we breathe. That said, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Asthma patients should avoid exertion or exercise outside when air pollution levels are high.
  • Avoid exposure to fumes from unvented gas, oil, or kerosene stoves.
  • Avoid wood-burning appliances or fireplaces.
  • Avoid sprays and strong odors, including perfumes, cooking odors, and cleaning agents.
